The Horticulture and Home Industries section of Antrim Show have been busy preparing for this year’s Show Day on July 26 at Shane’s Castle, Antrim.
They recently held an evening for stewards, sponsors and exhibitors at Lorraine Duncan’s Country Cakes Barn to launch the 2014 Horticulture and Home Industries Schedule.
Show Chairman James Clements welcomed everyone and thanked them for their support. He said the Horticulture and Home Industries section of the Show plays an important role in bringing people from town and country together in a celebration of skills and pastimes new and old.
With exhibitors from 4 to 94 and almost 200 competitions which are all displayed and judged on show day the marquee will have something for everyone.
Chief Steward, Gale Anderson, emphasized the importance of an early launch of the Horticulture and Home Industries Schedule, as some exhibitors especially in the Work, Craft and Horticulture classes require an early start to get ready for Show day in July.
Gale went on to highlight the main changes for the year ahead.
Brand new for the 2014 Show is the introduction of a Honey section. Gale said: “We are keeping it simple for the first year with just three classes, Light, Medium and Dark and with expert Honey Judge, Jim Fletcher to guide us we hope to attract Bee Keepers from near and far.”
In recent years we have had an additional prize for the Young Farmers Club whose members tallied up the most points within the Horticulture and Home Industries marquee. This year we plan to offer the same, for all local Women’s Institutes. We are hoping this will be well supported both by current and new exhibitors.
To encourage more young growers to present their produce for exhibition we have extended the upper age limit of the Children’s Horticulture classes to 16 years old, our Monthly newsletters are available on our website.
Also new for 2014 are 3 new baking classes covering Gluten Free Biscuits, a Gluten Free Cake and a loaf of yeast Bread.
As always the Show invites local Primary Schools to put on a display for the Schools Art Competition, and for the first time we are offering a choice of themes. Gale expressed her thanks to the teachers and assistants that took time out of their summer holidays to display their schools entries each year.
The early schedule contains all the new titles and themes for the year ahead. Schedules, entry forms and newsletters are all available to download or view on the Home Industries page at www.antrimshow.com or by contacting Gale Anderson on 07808 736862
