South Antrim DUP MLA Pam Cameron has backed a motion at Stormont calling for greater accessibility to funding for cancer drug.

“People who have been diagnosed with Cancer have the right to expect that they will have access to the most effective treatments available,” Mrs Cameron said.

She added that the drug Avastin, which can help in the treatment of Ovarian Cancer, is not prescribed in Northern Ireland.

“The drug is one of 38 which is routinely prescribed in England and Scotland but is not available to patients in Northern Ireland, [this] motion asks for the Minister to undertake a review and of practices in Northern Ireland to bring us into line with the rest of the UK,” Mrs Cameron added.

Mrs Cameron added: “During the course of the debate I was heartened to hear the Minister has prepared a report for the First and Deputy First Minister proposing a reintroduction of a nominal prescription charge from which I hope some funds could be directed into a Cancer Drugs Fund.”
