South Antrim DUP MLA Pam Cameron has expressed her disappointment over tyres being burnt on Eleventh night bonfires.

Mrs Cameron, who is Deputy Chair of the Assembly’s Environment Committee, said that despite assurances to the contrary, tyres were burned on some bonfires in the Antrim and Newtownabbey and borough’s on 11th July.

She added that in the cases brought to her attention, the tyres had been concealed and weren’t obvious until after the fires had burned out.

“The burning of tyres is extremely harmful to our health both through the toxic smoke they give off and in the chemicals they leave in the ground,” Mrs Cameron said.

She added: “Having recently raised the issue of illegally dumped tyres with the Minister for the Environment at Stormont I have been provided with assurances that his department is working to introduce tougher measures to ensure the illegal dumping of tyres does not carry on in the future.”
