South Antrim DUP MLA and Assembly Health Committee member, Pam Cameron, has spoken following the publication of the findings of a review into Emergency Departments called for by the Health Minister, Edwin Poots MLA.

She said: “The pressures facing our Emergency Departments have been well documented in recent months and following the declaration of a major incident at the Royal Victoria Hospital in January the Health Minister requested that the independent body; RQIA, carry out an inspection of the Emergency Department and how the Belfast Trust is managing unscheduled care. The statement by the Minister has highlighted a number of failings within the Trust largely due to a lack of identification and planning for busy periods such as during winter when Emergency Department admissions routinely see an increase.’

“It is clear to me that the situation in our hospitals where people are further traumatised by their experiences whilst being in an entirely vulnerable situation through illness is not acceptable and cannot be allowed to continue.”

She added: “I hope that the findings of this report will be taken on board by the Trust who; in my opinion, are not doing enough to bring about the necessary changes required to restore patients’ trust in the services provided. I am clear that these failings are down to those who manage the services and I am dismayed that front line healthcare professionals continue to be placed in this position time and time again.”
