South Antrim MLA Trevor Clarke has led an Assembly ‘Matter of the Day’ debate which he tabled on the announcement that renowned construction firm Mivan has ceased trading.

Speaking from Stormont Mr Clarke said: “It is sad that we are to lose this iconic name within the construction industry.

“I would also like to record our gratitude to the owner, Ivan McCabrey, for the 40 years in which he brought that business to the Antrim area and acknowledge the difficult trading times he had over that period. It is unfortunate that we are talking, today, about the possibility of more job losses in the Antrim area.

“Along with colleagues I have been in contact with the Enterprise Minister for some time since the initial problems within Mivan became public. I am assured from conversations with her that that the work has not ended just yet and that there may be some hope on the horizon for some of the workforce who have a huge range of skills which would be of great benefit to many firms.

“Even at this late stage our final hope would also be that another firm may still wish to keep the Mivan name alive, continue the work and retain the skillbase firmly within the Antrim area.”
