It was literally a marathon fundraising effort by the staff of St Benedict’s College when they took part in the Belfast City Marathon last week to raise much needed funds for the Centre of Hope in Dorohoi, Romania.
Undaunted by the poor weather conditions the team bravely took on the elements and the tough course to finish in a terrific time of around four hours.
Principal Sean McAuley, who ran the longest leg himself, said: “The staff always go the extra mile and indeed that is quite literal on this occasion.”
Mr McAuley was joined on the team by Ms Michelle McElhone, Mr B Doyle, Mr P McIver , Mr P McKendry, Miss Roisin Devlin and Miss Sarah McCormack.
The school has been supporting the Centre of Hope for a number of years. Mr McAuley and members of the school have visited the centre on a number of occasions.
The Centre of Hope provides daily meals, showers and play facilities for poor local families and young people who have recently moved out of the orphanages and are trying to make a life for themselves.
