Local Alliance representatives have spoken of their anger after another illegal tyre dumping incident in the Antrim borough.
As the Times reported last week, hundreds of tyres have been dumped in the Nutts Corner area in recent months with Councillor Annemarie Logue highlighting incidents were people had witnessed tyres being dumped from vehicles.
Now, the Alliance Party’s Alan Lawther and Julian McGrath have hit out at those responsible for dumping tyres near to the village of Parkgate, alongside the picturesque Six Mile Water.
Councillor Lawther and Mr McGrath, who will be standing as a candidate in the forthcoming local council elections, said the cost of having to clean up after the illegal tyre dumping would be ultimately met by local rate-payers.
“It is simply appalling,” Mr McGrath said.
He added: “The cost to the Antrim Borough ratepayer is huge in terms of the clean up required in such incidences.
“This money can be directed to much more beneficial services for local people. This is an illegal activity that can result in a £50,000 fine or prison term.”
The Northern Ireland Assembly’s Committee for the Environment, chaired by Alliance MLA Anna Lo, published a report on this issue in May 2013.
Mr McGrath added: “That Assembly report highlighted how this is in real danger of getting out of control across Northern Ireland.
“The report made 20 important draft recommendations and not even half have been implemented. In particular, that Committee reported that it would like to see all sectors in the used tyre chain required to register with a compliance scheme, as well as more powers for the Department of the Environment to regulate and track tyre disposal.”
Mr McGrath urged local people to report any sightings of tyres being illegally dumped to council or the PSNI.
“Ultimately we must ensure that all tyres are disposed of in a safe and environmentally responsible manner and that there is proper oversight of the disposal process,” Mr McGrath said.
He added: “There are 50 million tyres disposed of in the UK annually - could you imagine if everyone dumped them by the river side?”
Cllr. Lawther added: “The people of Antrim Borough should report any sightings of illegal tyre dumping to firstname.lastname@example.org
“This is a growing problem and should be dealt with through fines and penalties. I urge anyone
who witnesses these environmental crimes to come forward to the Council or the PSNI.”
